Stellar Drift – Survive the Void

Stellar Drift space station interior

Stellar Drift is a survival simulation game that places you on a damaged space station orbiting a dying star. Your crew is small, resources are limited, and help is years away. The game is a tense experience, but it is also deeply rewarding for players who enjoy planning, management, and slow-built tension.

The story is told through crew logs and radio transmissions. You start the game after an unexpected solar flare has fried several critical systems. Your job is to repair the station, keep your crew alive, and decide whether to wait for rescue or attempt a risky journey to a neighbouring system. There is no designated hero. There is just you, the survivors, and the cold, indifferent vacuum of space.

Atmosphere is central to this game. The sound of your own footsteps echoes through empty corridors. Alarms blare when oxygen drops. The camera occasionally shakes when the station is hit by micrometeoroids. The visual style is realistic but slightly cold, with muted colours and harsh lighting. It makes you feel vulnerable, which is exactly what the game is going for.

Gameplay revolves around resource management and crew assignment. You must decide who repairs the hull, who grows food in the hydroponic bay, and who works on building a long-range antenna. Every choice has a cost. If you spend too much time fixing the antenna, the food supply might run low. The game does not punish you for making mistakes, but it does force you to live with the consequences.

Combat is minimal. There are no aliens shooting at you. The threats are environmental: radiation leaks, hull breaches, fires, and equipment failures. This might sound boring to some, but it creates a different kind of tension. This is not a game about shooting; it is a game about making difficult decisions with incomplete information.

The game offers multiple endings based on your decisions and how many crew members survive. Some endings are hopeful, others are bittersweet. One ending in particular is quite emotional, and players who have become attached to their crew will find it moving.

Platform-wise, Stellar Drift is available on PC via Steam and GOG, as well as on Xbox Series X|S. It is also playable on the Steam Deck. A PlayStation 5 version was announced and is expected later this year, but it is not yet confirmed for release in Canada.

The price is CAD 44.99. The developers have been honest about their pricing and do not sell any essential DLC. There is one cosmetic pack that costs CAD 4.99, but it is optional and purely visual. The game also appears in bundles, which means you can sometimes get it at a discount.

The ESRB rating is T for Teen, suitable for players aged 13 and up. There is no violence in the traditional sense, but the game includes themes of loss, grief, and survival pressure that might be too intense for younger children. Parental guidance is recommended.

If you enjoy games like Frostpunk or This War of Mine, you will feel right at home in Stellar Drift. It takes the resource-management genre to zero gravity and creates an experience that is both tense and thoughtful. It is a unique entry in our list, and one that we highly recommend for players who like cerebral challenges.
